Lotto 6/49 is one of two national lottery games in Canada. It was launched on June 12, 1982 and it was considered to be the first nationwide Canadian lottery game that allows players to choose their own numbers. Other national games such as the Lotto Canada, Superlotto, and Olympic Lottery used pre-printed numbers on tickets while Lotto 6/49 was the one that led the change and gradual phase-out of that type of lottery game in Canada.

The largest single jackpot record in Canadian lottery history was drawn on April 13, 2013 for a jackpot of USD 63.4 million. There were four winning tickets. Three of the tickets were purchased in British Columbia, and the fourth in Alberta.

The second largest jackpot was drawn on October 26, 2005. The single winning ticket, worth USD 54.3 million, was purchased in Camrose, Alberta by a group of 17 oil and gas plant workers. The USD 54.3 million jackpot was originally estimated at USD 40 million, but because of rapid sales created by lottery fever across the country, the jackpot increased to USD 54,294,712. An estimated USD 99.4 million worth of tickets were sold.

The third largest jackpot was worth USD 50.3 million, was drawn on February 21, 2009. There were four winning tickets: three in Ontario and one in Quebec. The largest Lotto 6/49 jackpot, when tickets were USD 1 per play, was USD 26,410,706 on September 2, 1995.

Canada Lotto 649 Ticket Prizes

The game saw significant changes in September 2013. The minimum jackpot increased from USD 3,000,000 to USD 5,000,000 and along with a new "Free Play" prize for matching two main numbers, there is now a new "Guaranteed Prize Draw" in which one ticket holder is guaranteed to win USD 1,000,000 after every draw. The first draw took place on Wednesday September 18, 2013.

The prize pool for Lotto 6/49 is based on a parimutuel share. A parimutuel share is a calculation where the total monies allocated to a prize category are divided by the total number of winners in that category. There can be a bigger number of winning tickets and a lower prize share if there are popular combinations of numbers that are drawn. Some of the more popular combinations are based on sequence of numbers, vertical, horizontal or diagonal lines on selection slips, multiples of numbers, variations of historic dates or birth dates, etc. These combinations vary from draw to draw and change depending on customer play patterns.
